Laws and government services

Federal government

The Official Languages Act: few departments have offices in Nunavut and few services provided in French. According to Public Service Agency data, 4.3% of the 164 federal public service positions in Nunavut are designated bilingual.

Territorial government

An enhanced version of the Official Languages Act of Nunavut was enacted in June 2008, and its implementation will require federal government approval and funding. There are few services in French so far, but the new act mandates services in French at the municipal level. AFN participates in and monitors the implementation.

The Inuit Language Protection Act was assented to by the Government of Nunavut in September 2008.

Legal services

Legal aid services for Francophones in Nunavut are provided by the AFN.
